There’s a lot of good out there, and it doesn’t always receive the attention it deserves. In an effort to be a part of the solution, I decided to report on the good in the world of sports.
For all the bad things people want to say about Philly sports, the teams and organizations really do a lot of good. Most recently, they did something to make the best out of a horrible situation.
Great day getting to meet and hang with Mark Smith, such an amazing and strong person. pic.twitter.com/9JxqC32Me7

A few weeks ago, Mark Smith, a 38-year-old intellectually disabled man, was assaulted and the video of the attack quickly went viral. The attack was tough to watch as it was completely unprovoked. The 4 teens involved in the incident were arrested and charged. While justice was served, it felt like a guy like Mark deserved something more.
Even after the incident, Smith had such a positive attitude and refused to let the acts of 4 people get in his way. So, the Philadelphia Flyers did something about it. They invited him to their the practice facility, gave him a customized Flyers jersey, and a bunch of Flyers swag. All of which was delivered by defensemen Shane Gostisbehere and goalie Anthony Stolarz.

After all that he has been through, Smith said that he plans to donate the gear to local children. No one would think twice about him keeping it for himself; but hearing how he immediately thought about how to help others shows what a pure heart he really has. A great story of how sports can help turn a horrible situation into something positive.
